Tumkur (Kannada: ತುಮಕೂರು, Tumakuru) is one of the busiest industrial towns located in the state of Karnataka. Since 28 August 2010, Tumkur has been accorded the status of a Corporation city and Smart City in 2014. It is situated at a distance of 70 kilometers north west of the city of Bangalore along National Highway 4. It is the headquarters of Tumkur District.
Tumakuru City, nestled at the foot of Devarayana Durga Hills is a contemporary blend of the rich south Indian heritage, vividly seen in the various monuments in and around the city.
The cultivated products consist chiefly of Coconut, millet, rice, pulses, arecanut and oil seeds. The chief industries are the making of coarse cotton cloths, woolen blankets, ropes, watches (Hindustan Machine Tools), WIPRO, TVSE, SCII and Karmobiles Ltd. which is merged with Rane Madras.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a mega food park in Tumkur on 24 September 2014. The park has been developed with the support of the Ministry of Food, state and central governments. Future Group's food park is first of its kind in India with the group investing about Rs 250 crore in the project. Till date, 50 units have been established for food processing.
Tumakuru is a good study center from primary education to higher education. It has its own university. Within this town, there are seven technology institutions, two medical institutions and one dental institution.
ತುಮಕೂರು ನಗರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಹಾಗೂ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ನಗರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಹಾಗೂ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯುಳ್ಳ ಈ ನಗರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ 70 ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ಈಶಾನ್ಯ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಮಾರು 165 ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸುಮಾರು 15 ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಿಂದ ಜನ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ತಲುಪಬೇಕಾದರೆ, ತುಮಕೂರು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ - 206 ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಹಾದುಹೋಗಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತುಮಕೂರು ನಗರವು ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕವಾಗಿ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ದಿನೇ ದಿನೇ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಉಪನಗರದಂತಿದ್ದು ರಾಜಧಾನಿಗೆ ಪರ್ಯಾಯವಾದ ಜನ ವಸತಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಕೂಡ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದೂ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಉತ್ತರ ಭಾರತದ ನಗರಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸುವ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ-4 ಕೂಡ ಈ ನಗರದ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಾದುಹೋಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತುಮಕೂರು ನಗರವು ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ, ಕೈಗಾರಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಪರಿಸರ ಸಮತೋಲನ ಕಾಪಾಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರಿಗೆ ನಾಗರಿಕ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಘನ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಮೊದಲ ಆದ್ಯತೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

Tumakuru (Tumkur) district is an administrative district in the state of Karnataka in India. The district headquarters are located at Tumakur. The district occupies an area of 10,598 km² and had a population of 2,584,711, of which 19.62% were urban as of 2001. It is a one and a half hour drive from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.The district is known for the production of Coconut, is called as 'Kalpataru Nadu'.
It consists chiefly of elevated land intersected by river valleys. A range of hills rising to nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 m) crosses it from north to south, forming the watershed between the systems of the Krishna and the Kaveri. The principal streams are the Jayamangala and the Shimsha.
The mineral wealth of Tumakuru is considerable; iron is obtained in large quantities from the hillsides; and excellent building-stone is quarried. The slopes of the Devarayanadurga hills are clothed with forests. Wildlife such as leopards, bears and wild boar have been recorded here. Although, tigers have been recorded from these forests as late as the 1950s, most recent reports are of stray sightings and need confirmation. The annual rainfall averages 39 inches.
